  how difficult is japanese literature (like 100+ years old) for someone fluent in the language?

  Did you ever try speaking with ChatGPT? It works surprisingly well and might be a good way to do output practice for someone like me as a beginner
I give ChatGPT the words I have already learned so far and ask it to make some english sentences with those words to me so I can try translating it back to GPT in Japanese all in voice chat. Then it points out to me if I made any grammatical mistakes and how to fix them, etc. It's been working quite well

The main thing is each time you move to a "new line" its a point, so make sure you hit those as much as possible. Shooting the ship is 10, shooting bullets is 3, and also shoot the shields on level 8 for massive points

Right now Switch visual novels on my tv. Since I got to the point where I don't really need to look up words I can just lay back and soak it all in now

  I wana start reading as this is like the 2nd most important thing that people say you need to do to get better at Japanese...but the problem i have is when? Should i complete an Anki 2k word deck and then read? Or 500 words? I try to read now and every other word is like i just don't know it :(


you have the patience for it the best thing that you can do is start reading already and every sentence look up all the things you don't know. I couldn't push though it, I gave up so many times until I finally finished my first novel over 2 years in. Maybe try reading web articles too that are shorter and you can actually finish them unlike a book at the start. Many people in the community had significantly faster progress then me with that method

  I just love that this is a realistic representation of what a normal learning progress looks like. Even though you put in quite a lot of work on a daily basis (which some might not even be able to do). Do you think you could've passed N1 if you focused more on reading during your immersion? Such as VNs, books,.. etc? Just curious. Oh and nice glow up btw.


i think a lot of it could be traced to not reading challenging enough content early on. I only started really reading novels in a serious way around 4-5 months before the test. Most of my hours were on low effort YouTube videos where I didn't need to get any better to enjoy them. (Now that I got better I realized how much context I was missing, but I still enjoy them the same)

I liked this one about the extent to which animals talk. And it was formatted kinda like if it was a podcast written down between 2 researchers so it really wasn't that hard to follow.

  Are you going to start learning handwriting because of a particular interest in it?. Personally i wouldnt mind if i couldnt write my own name in front of other colleagues. The thing is, many people underestimate what it takes to become proficient in writing japanese by hand specially if you dont do it daily.I might learn to handwrite katakana and hiragana one day but thats just it.

I stopped tracking my time after the 2nd video because after 2 years I started to get annoyed doing it. I'd say I still do 2-4 hours a day but now I have some days where I don't do any Japanese if i have other stuff to do. I'd guess between 3500-4000 hours total

  I so wish I could actually spend three to four hours a day. If I were single and young and... instead I'm not young, I'm married, we've tons of things we have to do every day, I actually have a job.. etc. etc. etc. So I'm lucky if I can get half an hour of listening practice in. Now and then.


I did my hours with a full time job too but I basically just sit in my room all day watching my japanese escapism content. It's pretty lonely tbh. I assume you don't actually want to leave your family to learn japanese, and that's probably a good thing, so best to find a way to be comfortable with your situation. By the way I'm jealous of the younger people who claim they do 8 hours a day which I can't do. All perspective

Well saying I do now isn't fair to me at the start. I like stop and study words I don't know now because they are rarer. I read for a few hours today and only looked up a few dozen things
At the start though I just plowed through like crazy if I didn't understand because I wanted to find out what happened next. Honestly it's not the best strategy if you want to improve quickly...
Or if I was reading news articles or things like that, if I got lost I'd just click over to something else

I counted pause time/ time spent lookup up grammar during immersion. That just made sense to me, but some people only logged actual watch time. Depends what the point of your tracking is, mine was to compare total time to my other hobbies/life commitments

  ever work in fan translation group for a game?
I just wondering can i do it with my little knowledge in Japanese


I mean if your doing it for yourself that's no problem but unless your better than MTL then it's not gonna be very helpful for everyone. I've seen many people with little JP skill doing fan translations with MTL as a base and then just editing it, which doesnt lead to very good results unfortunately. I've attempted some video translations in the past (no mtl) and I definitely didn't feel good enough but its a seperate skill you have to practice so if that's what you wanna work towards, just do it and get better over time. I should try that again at my current level and see if it would go any better, but I'm totally slammed with projects atm lol

Don't use any modifiers if you want to make it as easy as possible. It's definitely the most skillful achievement in the game, you'll need to just get better at it

I have so many I really like I can't watch them all :(. Although my absolutely favorite is clearly KUN who now uploads 4 videos a day across 4 different channels lmfao. I'll recommend the non minecraft stuff because it's probably easier to get into. Also in all the games they put up text which explains whats going on which is very cool. I've literally probably watched on average more than an hour a day of KUN videos last year BTW. Here's a few other channels too

  Heyo, this is my hail marry as I cant for the life of me figure out a way to do this

I have a 60% keyboard that doesnt have f keys, to access the f keys I have to hold down function and for a bunch of stuff I do, its simply not possible to be holding down fn while clicking the number keys

I need a script that turns the fn key into a toggle, when I click it, it stays on until I click it again, is that something I can do with AHK? Ive been searching the internet for months


It depends on how the function key is implemented on your keyboard. I'm not doing any research for this comment or anything but it is possible that the function key is implemented in the hardware of your keyboard and that it's used to trigger a function circit or something like that. Which would mean it's not possible. If the key does something on its own in windows you can potentially automate it. Or use ahk to make other shortcuts for f keys which would absolutely work. good luck

  Great video, it's always fun to see someone else's learning pathway and I'm looking forward to that Year 2 update. I loved that minecraft deck idea btw, that was great. On that topic, can you recommend any good Japanese minecraft channels? I've tried to find some before but have never really known where to look.


I didn't actually do the Minecraft deck btw, but I like to try different things out and make learning fun. Man there's so many great Minecraft channels out there, but here's a few my favorites right now.ドズル社 - Tons of creative minecraft challenges/game show type contents. The members have their own separate channels you can follow tooゴラクバ - Used to be my favorite at the start, and now they recently announced their retiring. It's a hard question because I'm really not close to understanding everything even now, but I remember right around the 250-300 hour point things clicked in a big way and that's when I first started understanding the meaning of like anything in real time without any effort. It was extremely rare then, like this would happen once or twice in an entire video. Maybe sentences is even too strong of a word for it lol. People who main reading could get there a lot faster. Also I didn't study grammar lol

Something I personally very much relate to, which has lost me a lot of time and caused unnecessary stress, is that I worried about not encountering certain words which might be common in everyday Japanese. As such, more time was spent looking for overly tailored content than just jumping into content one enjoys.

I probably missed this part in the video, but how did you overcome the dreaded 'monolingual transition'? It always seems as though no matter how much progress I make, I cannot switch over to all-JP dicts. Still using English definitions, sadly, and have tried to have both Eng and JP dictionaries on my cards, but it won't work, likely due to my lack of coding and settings knowledge when it comes to Anki.


I didn't overcome the monolingual transition lol, at the time of this video I was in the middle of trying to make it work and shortly after failed and switched back to JMDict. I'm only now trying to reintroduce monolingual grammar lookups.

  What would you suggest for immersion if you are new to the language. I recently learned the 2 writing systems but I basically don't know any vocab yet.. is it better to grind a few hundred flashcards first or is jumping in when you don't know the vast majority of words ok?


I also was very concerned about watching the "right" content at first, but ultimately I just let that go and started watching the stuff that was the reason I started japanese (for me at the time Super mario 64 JP speedrun livestreams lol) with 0 comprehension. I essentially only knew all the hiragana and 私 when I started. Yes of course I learned vocab along side. Why are you learning japanese? Just watch what you want to watch when your fluent. I admit I didn't have a ton of reasons to learn JP at first either but over time I discovered stuff that I can't imagine my life without anymore. Of like the first 50 youtube channels I watched none of them are in my top 10 now. Give stuff a real shot before bailing. If you want to be a better student than I was, right at the start look for vocab that you are seeing and study those. After you've got like a few hundred hours under your belt I promise you will have enough confidence to make more fine tuned decisions on your own!

you just run around and fish the dark colored areas to get Gil's Items
and then you get fishing exp
It's supposed to be good fishing exp but more engaging than standing in one spot
But you don't get map exp like you would if you were catching/releasing/fighting normal fishing

Honestly wish I didn't have to use it but its the only keyboard I can use for more than an hour that doesn't make my fingers get into complete pain

  I started a discord server and pretty much the first day it went down in flames the rules didn't work I didn't have enough moderators an overall I wasn't prepared if you have any thing you could say that would help me or tips I wouldn't mind


I have no idea what your talking about but in general admin is very difficult. Lots of people in the rpg scene don't like me because of decisions I've made and the only people still left on TPK are the people who like my decisions. If your dealing with friends you can't just get them to go along with whatever your pressuring them to do. None of my irl friends care about TPK at all and barely Walden's world. That's not how that relationship is supposed to work

  Hey man, I thought it would be really cool to figure out how to make a bot that will play minesweeper, specifically googles browser version, but the only way I could think of to do this would take a heck ton of image searches. Got any ideas on how I could pull something like that off?


Just programming a minesweeper solver is hard enough. I remember programming minesweeper in class on my graphing calculator and there's a surprising amount you have to keep track of. Yea image searching might be your best bet. The first thing I'd try to do is write something that can get a picture of the game stage seperately maybe by image searching on every tile and then from there figure out what you need to do. You could also do a rolling update where when each tile is clicked you get the state of that specific tile using image search on that exact location and then as you go keep track of the board state. Sounds like a fun project!

We make custom tiles all the time. Usually its modifications of existing tiles
Just edit the Tileset image from the tiles folder or create a new image of your own

i tried for around a year to make a game from scratch and failed every time at the "I don't even know what I don't know" phase at the age of 11-12
then i got the source to tpk (before i owned it) and from that point i was able to get the game booted so to speak and toy around with that source. picking it a part and breaking things until i figured out what parts did what
if i never would've had that project starting point it's possible i wouldn't have made it

and battle session was stored in the db
so if you had chat disabled or disconnected the whole thing broke

But even still the problem with live battles is less that its techincally hard in itself but its more that the TPK battle system is so flawed

The like downard thing is a guitar slide
So I'm sliding out of the note right before I transition into the next section, which helps a lot to create that feeling

I read other peoples code and just figured out what they did
A basic RPG isn't that hard really
All you NEED is a simple battle script, a way to trade, and a box

If I started out trying to make a movable map system and live battles I never would've gotten that far

I coded those
My program "Scyther" connects to the IRC server and stays in the channel
and reads all messages
when it sees one with a ! in front it parses it
If its a valid command it runs the corresponding script

as well as removing the querys for those
By having a notifications field in the users table, so the fields don't have to be queryed every time
Lots of battles bug fixing
Added more daily gift prizes
Added titles to all clan pages
so if you are on leave clan page it'll say Leave Clan at the top
etc for all clan pages
Added an item class, although its kinda late in the game for new backend
