Walden's Wonderful ACT Tips "He's almost as good as George" English: - Coach sure drilled this into my head: The act is looking for conciseness in writing. When faced with a question that asks for like a sentence answer then you want to look for the one that is concise and still retains the meaning. - Read stuff out loud in your head: if it makes sense go with it (This is my worst subject, so this might not be good advice, but its what I did) - Know basic grammar rules that are commonly messed up in common speech (this is when above might not apply): who/whom I/me your/you're then/than ect Math: - There always is a way to do every problem - Plug it in the calculator - Look for quick and fast answers (I had a trap question on my last test that wanted you to do a systems of equations, but after 2 minutes of working it out I realized that all of the other ones could have been removed by process of elimation before even working it out) - Remember as you progres through the test that questions will be getting harder and harder. Make sure to double check calculations at the begining, and not to spend too much time on any one question at the end. Reading: - When tackling a passage I do these steps: 1. Scan the questions and pick out the ones that ask for line context. 2. Start reading the passage, doing questions with line context as you get to them 3. At the end of every paragraph scan questions again for content questions that relate to the paragraph 4. Answer general questions at the end - I wasn't good at this until I took AP Writing then I just got good at it Science: - Easily the hardest one for me, you have to be fast here - You have to treat it similar to the reading section - When tackling a new passage I do these steps: 1. Tackle any graph interpertation questions 2. Then read any experiments or studies text. Make sure you understand whats going on now. If you don't then read the text at the begining of the passage. 3. Answer any inference questions General Tips: - Keep a good rythmn with answering questions. I had a song stuck in my head basically the whole time and that kept things interesting (although I had no choice over this) - Being sexy does NOT improve test scores, no matter what George will tell you. - Never blind guess on a question, you can almost always eliminate an answer or two, improving your chances by a ton - As I like to, stay positive! A clear mind helps out a lot.
